Dancing Christmas Decorations

The Inspiration

This project was inspired by a desire to do something fun and some free time after finals season. We walked around the store and found a Christmas tree that danced in a circle to one song and a wooden nutcracker. The ultimate plan was to make the tree dance to the beat and the nutcracker to sing along with the Christmas songs.

The Christmas Tree

We used our own speaker and a separate MP3 player board to make it play the songs we wanted it to. For the movements, we used the existing motor and programmed it to move with the song

The Nutcracker

We attached a servo to the back stick that is used to move the mouth and connected a microphone to hear the song and make the nutcracker seemingly sing.

Hardware

Arduino
- Controlled the servos movements, the dancing and the playing of the songs on the SD card
MP3 Player Board
- Using an SD card, we downloaded all the desired Christmas songs onto the card and put it into the board, attached it to the Arduino and played the songs with a button push
Microphone
- We sensed when the noise level got higher than a certain point and once it passed that threshold, the servo would rotate and cause the mouth to open and the nutcracker to look like it was singing
