The Inspiration
The Inspiration
Annually, the Texas A&M chapter of IEEE holds a hardware hackathon that they call tamuMake. Myself and a few friends decided to sign up and see what we could do.
This hackathon was a 24 hour contest for teams of four to brainstorm, design, and create a functioning prototype of whatever they thought would impress the judges, all while showing off their skills in hardware and design. After getting a feel of the competition the previous year, our team came in with an idea and started implementing that idea when the clock hit 9.
The general concept for our project was to use camera vision to determine whether the object placed on the trash can was recycling, compost or just trash. This idea was inspired from the amount of recyclable or compostable objects that are just thrown into the trash can every day.

- Arduino Mega
- read outputs from the PixyCam and ran the servos to direct the waste into the correct bin
- Particle Photon
- used ultrasonic sensors to detect when the trash can was full, turned on an LED to indicate which can and sent a text message to the user to let them know it was time to take out the trash.
- PixyCam
- this camera was as color detecting camera, allowing us to make a working prototype to detect our three samples that we chose specifically to match the predetermined color for each trash bin.
- servos
- rotated the flaps inside of the white box to direct the trash into the correct bin
- LEDs
- were lit when the photon detected a bin to be full
- Raspberry Pi
- Other the course of the 24 hours, one team member used the raspberry pi to work on configuring object detection and had a small demonstration at the end of the day, but we weren't confident enough in it's ability to implement it into the demonstration.

- for controlling the servos and camera connected to the Arduino

- Autodesk Inventor
- for designing and animating the entire model for the trash can to confirm sizing and have a computer rendering to consider all parts of the design
